چکیده
A 70-year record of daily monsoon-season rainfall at a network of 13 stations in central-western India is analyzed using a 4state homogeneous hidden Markov model (HMM). The diagnosed states are seen to play distinct roles in the seasonal march of the monsoon, can be associated with “active” and “break” monsoon phases and capture the northward propagation of convective disturbances associated with the intraseasonal oscillation. Interannual variations in station rainfall are found to be associated with the alternation, from year to year, in the frequency of occurrence of wet and dry states; this mode of variability is well-correlated with both all-India monsoon rainfall and an index characterizing the strength of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Analysis of lowpassed time series suggests that variations in state frequency are responsible for the modulation of monsoon rainfall on multidecadal time

Tidal effects on stratospheric temperature series derived from successive advanced microwave sounding units
Stratospheric temperature series derived from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) on board successive NOAA satellites reveal, during periods of overlap, some bias and drifts. Part of the reason for these discrepancies could be atmospheric tides as the orbits of these satellites drifted, inducing large changes in the actual times of measurement. NOAA 15 and 16, which exhibit a long perio...

Atmospheric turbulence generated in flow over mountainous terrain is studied using airborne in situ and cloud radar measurements over the Medicine Bow Mountains in southeast Wyoming, USA. During the NASA Orographic Clouds Experiment (NASA06) in 2006, two complex mountain flow cases were documented by the University of Wyoming King Air research aircraft carrying the Wyoming Cloud Radar. The stru...
متن کاملPolar vortices on Earth and Mars: A comparative study of the climatology and variability from reanalyses
Polar vortices on Mars provide case-studies to aid understanding of geophysical vortex dynamics and may help to resolve long-standing issues regarding polar vortices on Earth. Due to the recent development of the first publicly available Martian reanalysis dataset (MACDA), for the first time we are able to characterise thoroughly the structure and evolution of the Martian polar vortices, and he...
متن کاملNorth Atlantic Climate Variability: Phenomena, Impacts and Mechanisms
Variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Tropical Atlantic dominate the climate of the North Atlantic sector, the underlying ocean and surrounding continents on interannual to decadal time scales. Here we review these phenomena, their climatic impacts and our present state of understanding of their underlying cause. Copyright © 2001 Royal Meteorological Society.
